KOREA WINS 3 GOLDS ON 2ND DAY OF COMPETITION AT WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS; GERMANY GRABS 1ST EVER GOLD

Korea clinched three gold medals on the second day of the 9th World Junior Taekwondo Championships at the Sharm El Sheikh Covered Hall in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt on April 5, 2012.

 

Germany won one gold medal, which was the country's first gold medal ever at the World Junior Taekwondo Championships. Iran, Turkey, Greece and Thailand grabbed one silver medal each.

 

In the men's -51kg division, Korea's Dae-young Kim required a fourth sudden-death round to grab the gold medal. The silver went to Iran's Mohammad Kazemi Foushazdeh. Guatemala's Francisco Jose Palacios Matias and Thailand's Suttisak Janthong earned their respective country a bronze medal in the same weight division. In the men's -73kg category, Korea's Jong-hun Won brushed aside a stiff challenge from Greece's Apostolos Telikostoglou to won the final match 9-8 for the gold medal. The bronze went to Canada's Erik Pec Gibski and Romania's Zsolt Feher in the same weight division.

 

In the women's -46kg division, Korea's Min-ji Im easily beat her final match opponent, Thailand's Apitchaya Chaikaew, 10-2 to clinch the gold medal. The United States' Giuliana Gil and Croatia's Mateja Kunovic shared the bronze medal. In the women's -63kg category, Germany's Schneider Yanna outpointed her final match opponent, Turkey's Durdane Altunel 4-3 to earn her country the gold medal. The bronze went to the Czech Republic's Schindlerova Tereza and Mexico's Melissa Oviedo Cardenas.
