World Taekwondo Grand Slam Champions Series offers road to Olympic Games

Winners of Wuxi 2

SEOUL, Korea (August 2, 2018) - Athletes competing in the World Taekwondo Grand Slam Champions series will have the opportunity to qualify one place each for their respective National Olympic Committees (NOCs) at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

The Olympic quota places will be assigned to the top ranked athletes in each weight category based on their World Taekwondo Grand Slam Merit Points Standings as of January 2020. However, if these top ranked athletes are also ranked in the top five of the World Taekwondo Olympic Rankings in the same weight division after the 2019 World Taekwondo Grand Prix final there will be no additional quota based on GS Merit Points Standings. In that case, the NOC will be given the ticket for athlete who is ranked in the top six of Olympic Rankings at the Tokyo 2020.

The latest World Taekwondo Grand Slam Merit Points Standings as of April 2018 have been published on the World Taekwondo website. The points are calculated based on athletes’ results from the 2017 Open Qualification Tournament for the Wuxi 2017 World Taekwondo Grand Slam Champions Series, Wuxi 2017 World Taekwondo Grand Slam Series and the Open Qualification Tournament I for the Wuxi 2018 World Taekwondo Grand Slam Champions Series.

The updated World Taekwondo Grand Slam Merit Point Standings will be released after the second Open Qualification Tournament for the 2018 Grand Slam Series on 26-28 October.

The Open Qualification Tournament for the 2018 Grand Slam Series is open to competitors from any combat sport. However, they will have to fight under World Taekwondo competitons rules.
