AI Meets Taekwondo: Shaping the Future of the Sport at the 2025 Jeonbuk Sports Taekwondo International Convergence Conference

 

MUJU, Korea (Jul 5, 2025) — The 2025 Jeonbuk Sports Taekwondo International Convergence Conference, hosted and organized by World Taekwondo (WT) in academic partnership with the Korea Society of Sports AI and Big Data, and supported by Jeonbuk Province, Muju County, and the Taekwondo Promotion Foundation, got underway today at the Taekwondowon in Muju, Korea under the theme: “AI and Sports Taekwondo.”

 

The event brings together the worlds of Taekwondo and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in a groundbreaking fusion of tradition and technology that will bring about a new era for Taekwondo.

 

Unlike conventional academic forums, this two-day conference fosters strategic, interdisciplinary dialogue at the intersection of technology, sports, education, and data science. Participants are exploring how AI is reshaping the landscape of Taekwondo — from training systems and performance analytics to global development and fan engagement.

  • July 6 (Sun): Real-World AI Applications in Taekwondo and Future Pathways

 

During the opening ceremony, World Taekwondo President Dr. Chungwon Choue said:

This conference marks a new chapter where tradition meets technology. AI will become a powerful tool to elevate Taekwondo’s global impact.

 

Also in attendance were WT Secretary General Jeongkang Seo and Taekwondowon Chairman Jungheon Kim, reinforcing the shared commitment to exploring Taekwondo’s future through innovation.

The conference features a distinguished lineup of global experts leading innovation in AI and sport:

 

  • Dr. Patrick Lucey, Chief Scientist at Stats Perform
    A co-author of the International Olympic Committee’s AI Agenda, Dr. Lucey presented a pre-recorded keynote on the use of AI and data to generate advanced sports statistics and insights.

 

  • Mr. Inigo Cristobal, AI Lead at olympics.com

Introduced “Best Practice Using AI for Tools,” showcasing real-world applications of AI in digital fan engagement and content curation on the Olympic platform—highlighting potential adaptations for Taekwondo.

 

  • Dr. John Cullen, Director of TV, World Taekwondo
    In his talk titled “Embracing AI in Taekwondo,” Dr. Cullen outlined how AI is revolutionizing sports broadcasting, enhancing storytelling, and personalizing content delivery to enrich the Taekwondo fan experience.

 

 

  • Dr. Russell Ahn, Professor at UC Berkeley
    Delivering a presentation titled “Balancing AI with Human Values in Taekwondo Education,” Dr. Ahn emphasized the importance of embracing new technologies while safeguarding the core values and human-centered philosophy that define Taekwondo.
