World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships in Hong Kong, China to highlight sport’s growth

 

HONGKONG, China (Nov 25, 2024) - A record 1,727 athletes are set to compete at the World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships in Hong Kong, China from November 30 to December 4.

 

This is the 13th edition of the World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships, and it will feature athletes from 77 countries in addition to Individual Neutral Athletes (AIN) – another record for the event. The previous high had been set at Taipei 2018, where 1,274 athletes from 59 countries participated.

 

Competition at the World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships will be held in the Recognised Poomsae and Freestyle Poomsae categories.

 

The spectacular Hong Kong Coliseum is set to provide a fitting venue for the best athletes from around the world to showcase their talents and compete for medals.

 

The final day of the World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships will be followed by a celebration in the form of the World Taekwondo 2024 Gala Awards, recognising extraordinary achievements from athletes, coaches, referees and Member National Associations.

 

World Taekwondo President Chungwon Choue expressed his excitement for the World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships.

 

“We are delighted to be staging this year’s World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships in Hong Kong, China and we are confident our athletes will thrive in an outstanding competition environment,” President Choue said.

 

“Poomsae is a wonderful demonstration of Taekwondo’s inclusivity, and promotion of respect and excellence. It continues to grow in popularity around the world, and this is reflected in the record number of athletes from a record number of countries who will be competing at the World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships.

 

“We are also looking forward to reflecting on this year’s successes and celebrating with the global Taekwondo family at the World Taekwondo 2024 Gala Awards.”

 

In the Recognised Poomsae categories at the World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships, eight individual events for each gender will be held in age divisions from Cadet (ages 12-14) through to Over 65s. There are six age divisions in the pair and team events.

 

Freestyle Poomsae will feature competition in the men’s and women’s individual, pair and mixed team categories.

 

The World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships dates back to the first edition in Seoul, Korea in 2006.
